Experience world-class beach fishing on K'gari

K'gari is renowned for its pristine beaches and abundant marine life, making it a top destination for beach fishing enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a first-time fisher, K'gari offers an unforgettable experience with its stunning coastal scenery and diverse fish species.

75-Mile Beach: This iconic stretch of beach is the most popular spot for beach fishing on K'gari. Known for its accessible fishing and wide variety of fish species, it’s perfect for both novice and experienced anglers. You can fish from the surf for species like tailor, whiting, and bream.

Waddy Point: A prime location for those looking to fish off the northern tip of the island. The area offers excellent fishing opportunities for both land-based and boat anglers, with a mix of species such as tailor, flathead, and trevally.

Indian Head: This rocky outcrop offers great fishing opportunities from the beach, especially for species like tailor, mackerel, and giant trevally. It’s a fantastic spot for those looking for a bit of adventure while fishing.

One of the most exciting fishing experiences on K'gari is the tailor season, which typically runs from April to October. During this time, the beaches of K'gari are a hotspot for catching tailor, which migrate along the coast in large numbers. The best fishing for tailor is usually early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and using pilchards, sandworms, or live bait can increase your chances of success. Bait can be purchased from the General Store at K'gari Beach Resort.

K'gari is a protected area, and there are fishing regulations in place to help preserve its natural environment and marine life. Here are some key regulations to keep in mind:

  • Keep fish, bait and berley in sealed containers away from wongari (dingoes).
  • Bury fish remains and unused bait just below high tide mark—dig a deep hole and cover the fish scraps with at least 50cm of sand.
  • Bury fish remains when wongari are not around, so they don't associate finding the remains with people.
  • Dispose of used bait bags and unwanted fishing line in bins.
  • All freshwater fish are protected on K'gari—fishing or collecting bait in lakes and streams is not permitted.

It is important to always dispose of fishing lines, hooks, and other tackle properly. Never leave any litter behind on the beach or in the water. Fishing lines and waste materials can pose serious risks to wildlife, including birds and marine animals. Use designated bins or take all rubbish with you to dispose of it safely.
